Since its founding in 1996, the island's history has been closely linked to major world events.

In the Al Jazeera work course, you can find stories about everything from the highest ranks of the self-made human spirit to the lowest levels of dictatorship, oppression and abuse of power.

For decades, Al Jazeera has struggled to provide free access to information and to establish principles of freedom of thought and expression in one of the hottest regions in the world.

Al Jazeera news rooms and offices around the world are filled with brave men and women, each with a story to tell.

Al Jazeera's journalists paid for their pursuit of pioneering journalism, and eleven of its field correspondents were martyred in wars on the front lines. One of its journalists was imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay for more than six years. Some of them suffered torture in Abu Ghraib prison. For many years, the broadcast signal for the Al-Jazeera satellite channel was repeatedly jammed, and its digital platforms were blocked, to ensure that people were prevented from viewing, listening to or reading its content.

Many more of our journalists were detained, tried on trumped-up charges, were intimidated, their work licenses revoked, and forced to leave their homes forever - even some were sentenced to death. Some countries openly called for the closure of Al-Jazeera itself.
